Find your perfect screen-free sanctuary across the United States.
UNDERSTANDING THE CONCEPT
The United States is not the first country that comes to mind for a digital detox. Yet beneath the surface of one of the world’s most connected nations lies something increasingly rare: the space, the silence, and the natural grandeur to support a genuine screen-free retreat.
From the ancient red rock canyons of Utah to the misty redwood forests of Northern California, the US offers some of the most dramatic and diverse landscapes on earth for unplugging. Desert meditation centres, mountain wellness lodges, and coastal mindfulness retreats make it possible to disconnect deeply, without ever leaving the country.
Why choose the United States
The United States may be the birthplace of Silicon Valley, but it is also home to some of the world’s most powerful environments for stepping away from it.
🧘
The US has one of the most developed mindfulness and contemplative wellness industries in the world. From Insight Meditation Society retreats in Massachusetts to Zen mountain centres in New Mexico, the depth and quality of practice is extraordinary.
🌿
Few countries on earth offer such extreme landscape diversity. The silence of the Sonoran Desert, the scale of the Rockies, the ancient stillness of old-growth forests in the Pacific Northwest: these are environments that make switching off feel not just easy, but inevitable.
✈️
For US residents, a domestic digital detox retreat removes the logistical barriers entirely. No passport, no jet lag, no long-haul flight. Just a direct drive or short flight to a place where you hand in your devices and begin.
🌍
The United States hosts some of the most sophisticated wellness retreat centres in the world. Many have been operating for decades, with highly trained facilitators, research-backed programmes, and facilities designed specifically for extended stays off-screen.
🌅
Embedded within one of the world’s fastest cultures are pockets of extraordinary stillness. Quaker retreat centres, Trappist monasteries, indigenous-inspired desert lodges, and off-grid wilderness camps offer a counterculture of slowness that feels all the more powerful for the contrast.
💚
From accessible weekend retreats in the Hudson Valley to premium week-long programmes in the California hills, the US offers digital detox options across a wide range of budgets. There is no need to travel abroad to find something transformative.
EXPLORE BY REGION
The United States’ regions each offer a distinct character for a digital detox experience and this is just a glimpse. From the desert silence of the Southwest to the ancient forests of the Pacific Coast, here are a few highlights to inspire you.
01
Sedona is America’s spiritual retreat capital. Surrounded by towering red rock formations and said to sit on powerful energy vortexes, it draws those seeking meditation, energy healing, and genuine silence in a landscape of almost impossible beauty.
02
Beyond the Full Moon Party, Ojai, California has quietly become one of Asia’s leading wellness islands. Its northern and western coasts host a dense concentration of yoga centres, silent retreat spaces, and holistic health programmes.
03
A small mountain town in Mae Hong Son province, Catskills, New York attracts those seeking genuine slowness. No crowds, no urgency. Natural hot springs, waterfalls, and valley views make it ideal for a self-directed digital detox stay.
04
One of the most dramatic coastlines in the world, Big Sur has long been a destination for artists, seekers, and those needing to step outside ordinary life. A handful of exceptional retreat centres offer structured programmes against a backdrop of cliff, ocean, and redwood.
05
Often overlooked in favour of more famous destinations, the high desert of New Mexico offers a raw, spacious silence unlike anywhere else in the country. Sparse landscapes, ancient pueblo culture, and a handful of deeply considered retreat centres make it perfect for those seeking true immersion.
Choose your rythm
The length of your stay matters more than most people expect. Research on screen dependency and nervous system recovery consistently shows that the benefits deepen significantly over time:
3-5 days
Gets you through the initial adjustment phase. Suitable as an introduction, but not long enough for lasting change.
7-10 days
The most commonly recommended minimum. By day 5 or 6, most guests report sleep deepening, appetite changing, presence increasing.
14+ days
Guests who stay two weeks or more consistently report their relationship with devices changes durably, for months afterwards.
Frequently asked
Everything you want to know before booking your screen-free retreat in the United States.
Yes. Solo travel to a US digital detox retreat is very common and the environment is designed for it. Most guests arrive alone, and the shared experience of unplugging together makes it one of the easiest settings in which to meet people authentically.
No. All retreats on our platform operate in English. Staff at retreat centres in Sedona, Arizona, Ojai, California, and Big Sur, California are generally fluent in English, and programmes are designed for international guests.
A yoga retreat may or may not have a device policy. A digital detox retreat places the intentional disconnection from screens at the heart of the programme: device-free time is structured, WiFi is absent from shared spaces, and the entire schedule is designed to redirect your attention toward nature, body, and genuine presence.
Policies vary by retreat. Some ask guests to hand in devices on arrival; others allow a phone stored away for genuine emergencies only. Every retreat on our platform has a staff contact available for your family or colleagues if needed.
Both are excellent. Sedona, Arizona offers cooler temperatures, a deeper meditation culture, and forest environments. Ojai, California suits yoga, ocean, and a more social wellness community. Contact us if you are undecided, we will recommend based on your profile.
Summer (June through August) and the holiday period (late December) fill fastest, particularly for retreats in New York State and California. For spring and autumn stays, three to four weeks notice is generally sufficient. Silent retreats and small wilderness lodges tend to fill earliest regardless of season.
